Animal Welfare
PawMarket SA supports responsible ownership of dogs, cats, birds, and other companion animals, and compliance with South African welfare laws, including the Animals Protection Act 71 of 1962.
Prohibited behavior includes mutilation, neglect, and unlawful breeding or sale practices affecting dogs, cats, birds, or other listed animals.
Birds in South Africa
It is illegal to sell wild-caught birds in South Africa. Listings must be for captive-bred birds only. Sellers should keep records of origin and comply with permit requirements where they apply.
Certain species (including African Grey Parrots and Eclectus Parrots) are regulated under CITES (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species). Trade may require a valid CITES permit or registration — sellers must ensure any listing for these species is lawful and accurately declared.
PawMarket SA expects sellers to follow provincial nature conservation and permitting rules, municipal by-laws where relevant, and to be transparent about captive breeding, leg bands, and health checks. Buyers should ask for documentation before purchase.
